Lord
Jagannatha's
Festival
June 23rd,
Victoria
Square,
Birmingham
England
From 12
noon to 9
PM
About the
festival:
The
festival
of Lord
Jagannatha
is one of
the most
ancient
and
cherished
annual
events on
the Hindu
calendar.
Millions
of
pilgrims
from all
over
India and
the world
will be
attending
this
year's
festival
in
Jagannatha
Puri,
Orissa,
India on
the exact
same day
as our
celebration
here in
Birmingham
City
Centre!
The story
of Lord
Jagannatha
attracts
the hearts
and minds
of all
people.
The name
Jagannatha
means
"The
Lord of
The
Universe,"
and is one
of the
many
names by
which Lord
Sri
Krishna,
The
Supreme
Lord, is
known. In
brief, the
festival
is the
joyous
celebration
of Lord
Krishna's
return to
His
beautiful
home and
beloved
devotees
in the
sacred
cowherd
village of
Vrindavan
from
His
opulent
capital in
Dwaraka.
Lord
Krishna
had left
His sweet,
simple
life with
His dear
most
devotees,
the
cowherd
men and
women of
Vrindavan,
to rule
over the
world, as
the
Divine
King.
Although
He had all
opulence,
worship,
and the
reverent
love of
His
devotees
in Dwaraka,
Lord
Krishna
missed the
pure,
simple
love of
the
cowherd
men and
women of
Vrindavan.
Many years
had gone
by but the
Lord
never, for
a moment,
forgot the
sweet
dealings
with His
devotees.
Sometimes
He would
cry for
them
causing
the
residents
of Dwaraka
to wonder
what to do
for Him.
Sri
Krishna
especially
missed
Srimati
Radharani.
As His
topmost
devotee
She is the
only one
who, with
Her
perfect,
selfless
love and
devotion,
can
control
Lord
Krishna
and give
Him that
pure
spiritual
love He
relishes,
which is
without
any mood
of awe and
reverence
- only
pure
unadulterated
transcendental
love in
perfect
selflessness
and
devotion.
Finally,
after
seeing Sri
Krishna
was unable
to be
consoled
by the
residents
of Dwaraka,
Sri
Krishna's
brother,
Lord
Balarama,
and His
sister,
Lady
Subhadra,
escorted
Him back
to
Vrindavan
in
glorious
chariots
to be
reunited
with His
beloved
devotees
of
Vrindavan.
Upon
seeing
Srimati
Radharani
once
again,
after such
prolonged,
heart
rending,
separation,
Lord
Krishna
became
stunned.
His eyes
dilated in
wonder and
His limbs
went into
His body
like the
limbs of a
tortoise.
Likewise
His
brother
and
sister,
Balarama
and
Subhadra,
became
overwhelmed
in this
great mood
of
ecstatic
transcendental
love. The
cowherd
maidservants
of Srimati
Radharani
came to
Sri
Krishna's
aid and
chanted
Radharani's
name
loudly
bringing
Him back
to
external
consciousness
so Their
Most Holy
reunion
could
resume.
On this
day we
have the
great good
fortune to
behold the
Supreme
Lord and
receive
His
blessings
and mercy.
Also with
Lord
Jagannatha
(black
complexioned)
are the
Deity
forms of
Lord
Balarama
(white
complexioned)
and
Lady
Subhadra
(golden
complexioned).
Their
forms
reveal the
ecstasy of
the
pastime
described.
Once a
year Lord
Jagannatha
comes out
of His
splendid
temple in
Jagannatha
Puri,
India,
benedicting
all the
people of
the world,
who may
not be
able to
see Him
otherwise,
granting
pure
spiritual
peace and
harmony.
This
festival
is now
being
re-enacted
in all the
world's
major
cities,
such
as London,
New York,
Tokyo,
Sidney,
Paris,
Birmingham,
etc.,
largely by
the
efforts of
Lord
Krishna's
pure
devotee,
His Divine
Grace
Srila
Bhaktivedanta
Swami
Maharaja,
who spread
this
Krishna
consciousness
movement
to all
corners of
the world.
Now,
following
in his
footsteps
is his
close
friend
and
foremost
disciple,
His Divine
Grace
Srila
Bhaktivedanta
Narayana
Maharaja.
Srila
Narayana
Maharaja,
a pure
devotee of
Lord
Krishna,
is the
world's
most
prominent
exponent
of Bhakti-yoga
(the
simple
spiritual
process
to link
with the
Supreme
Lord in
loving
devotion),
in the
world
today. We
are most
grateful
to have
his
saintly
association
here in
Birmingham
for
this
occasion.
The
festival
being held
here in
Birmingham
is unique
in many
ways. The
Deity of
Lord
Jagannatha
is the
largest
Deity of
Him in the
world,
standing
15 feet in
height!
Also, in
the mood
of the
Lord, who
is most
accessible
on
this day,
we are
hoping to
feed
10,000
people in
charity,
pure
sumptuous
vegetarian
food! Come
join the
celebrants
and
dignitaries
from all
over the
world in
this grand
festival
of Lord
Jagannatha!
Jaya
Jagannatha!
