BIKRAM SINGH (back to top)

Born in Punjab, the heart of true Bhangra, Bikram was raised on the sounds that have shaped his life. With early influences that include Kuldip Manak, Yamla Jatt, Malkit Singh, Hans Raj Hans, and Surjit Bindrakhia, Bikram was raised on a steady diet of powerful, emotional Bhangra that has helped him create a traditional style that continues the proud tradition of the Punjabi culture, preserving the deep passion, energy and urgency of the music. Moving to the US in his early teens, BIKRAM has fused the ancient culture of Punjab and the "pind" (village), along with a modern sensibility and edge that resonates with the energetic lifestyle of New York City. Mixing in striking elements of reggae and hip-hop, Bikram has brought Bhangra to the future without sacrificing any of the classic beauty of the music. http://www.bikramsingh.com/

NIHAL MEHTA (back to top)

Nihal Mehta has been proficient at a wide range of musical experimentation. With classical upbringings in string and brass, Nihal has created a robust base and appreciation for traditional and contemporary music. Nihal first touched the turntables in 1998, and was immediately attracted to the world of Jungle and Drum & Bass - soon he fused these with traditional Indian sounds, such as female vocals and tabla/sitar. After learning to play the tabla and sitar both, Nihal continues to fuse classical Indian sounds into house and progressive house, merging the worlds of the traditional East with the contemporary West. Nihal's inspirations include Nitin Sawhney, Talvin Singh, Miguel Migs and Steve Lawler.

ARPANA CAUR (back to top)

ARPANA CAUR, a self-taught artist, was born in Delhi in 1954. Since the beginning of her career ARPANA's main concern has been the girl child, condition of women and growing violence in India. She has been consistently figurative. She also does printmaking. Between 1975 and 1996, Arpana had 18 solo shows of her paintings, and participated in nine national and international exhibitions and art festivals, including the First Baghdad Biennale (1986), Algiers Biennale (1987), group shows at Saytama Museum and Glenbarra Museum, Japan, the exhibition 'Imagined City', Museum of Modem Art, Brasilia, Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro (1994-95). In 1995, ARPANA executed the commission for doing a large painting for the Hiroshima Museum's permanent collection, on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Nuclear Holocaust. She received the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society Award in 1985, Commendation Certificate at the Algiers Biennale, and Gold Medal at the Sixth Triennale-India'(1 986), and was nominated by the Lalit Kala Akademi as the Eminent Artist (1990, '91, '92). Her works are in many private and public collections in India and abroad including National Gallery of Modem AM New Delhi, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Bradford Museum, U. K.Kunst Museum, Dusseldorf, Singapore Museum of Modem Art and the Ethnographic Museum, Stockholm. Arpana Caur lives and works in New Delhi.

AMRIT AND RABINDRA KAUR SINGH (back to top)

London born artists and twin sisters Amrit and Rabindra have exhibited widely in the UK and abroad. Whilst drawing essentially on the Indian miniature tradition, their award winning paintings combine elements from Western and Eastern aesthetics to create a unique genre in British Art practice which asserts the value of traditional and non European art forms to the continuing development of Contemporary Art practice. Describing their work as Past - Modern (as opposed to Post Modern), they challenge existing stereotypes and redefine generally accepted, narrow perceptions of heritage and identity - exploring cultural, social and political issues of global significance within a highly decorative, often witty and symbolic style which has universal appeal and transcends cultural barriers. With paintings in private and public collections world wide the Singh Twins (as they are more popularly known) continue to be invited to present lectures on their work at institutions such as the Tate Gallery, London; The Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada; University of California, Santa Barbara and the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco.

DYA SINGH (back to top)

DYA SINGH sings about spirituality in his native Punjabi (with occasional English explanations) and blends traditional music with modern and contemporary trends. He has taken the traditional Sikh spiritual music of his ancestral Punjab into the world music stage reaching out from his source indigenous music to fusion with music from other parts of the world. Today DYA SINGH heads one of the foremost 'world' music groups in Australia named after him and has nine albums in ten short years. The group was born in 1993. He has twice been awarded 'Instrumentalist of the year' by SAMIA (South Australian Music Industry awards). The group has twice been nominated 'World Music Group of the year' winning it once. In the year 2000, Dya Singh was awarded "Male Artiste of the Year" by the Australian World Music Organization. The group now travels widely throughout the world and is highly acclaimed by both Sikh and alternative mainstream audiences. http://www.sikhnet.com/dya

Subject: Shaheedi Immortality II : The Second Rising | Press Release

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Shaheedi Immortality II : The Second Rising

"Sir Jave Ta Jave Mera Sikhi Sidhak Na Jave"
(if I die then so be it, but may my faith in Sikhi remain firm)

This year commemorates the 20th anniversary of the attack on the most holiest Sikh shrine Sri Darbar Sahib (The Golden Temple) Amritsar along with 40 historical Sikh Shrines and the November massacres, which left thousands dead, wounded, destroyed and homeless.  As these events fade from public memory, it is the victims that continue to grieve with their hopes of securing justice from the Indian state, and loved ones returning, rapidly eroding.

A whole generation of Sikh youth have been wiped out in India during the last two decades of the anti-Sikh lynching through ‘police encounters’, which were in reality extra judicial executions, or commonly known to Human Rights Organizations as fake police encounters. Many others have been tortured to death, some missing never to return to their loved ones, thousands remain in prison and hundreds on death row.

As the sons and daughters of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, we must ask ourselves what we can do.  Let us start by remembering the sacrifices of the four sahibzades and the countless other Sikhs who have given their all to protect the honour of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

This album is dedicated to those individuals who have given their all to uphold the tradition of martyrdom, we pay homage to the Shaheeds of the Sikh Nation from past to present, those who continue to tread the path and those who will play the game of love through shaheedi – they will be immortal and never forgotten.

Profits from the sale of this CD will go back into doing sewa, the contributors have not taken a penny in producing this project.

We hope you will enjoy the CD and hopefully we will all Awake (Jago) to the suffering off our brothers and sisters back home and take positive action in attaining justice!

The first release will be at the Southall Nagar Kirtan on the 4th April 2004
So get your copies there or contact us at
info@shaheedi.com for other release dates.

> It was about 2pm.The place is Indo-Pak border near the sleepy Indian town of Dera Baba Nanak in Distt. Gurdaspur. The cold (It was about 5o Celsius) couldn't deter them from their pious prayers. Plus this time the  drizzle was witness apart from almighty God. Because it was their 35th amavas prayer in a row.  And they are praying since April 2001 every amavas, the moonless day. And they said, "Oh God Waheguru bestow strength to our beloved Prime Minister Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee to agree to the international peace proposal and strengthen the hands of Gen. Musharraf the President of Pakistan who has announced to grant a corridor to Kartarpur."   No doubt it was an unusual prayer and that too on the 'enemy border' in the witness of Indian Border Security Force and the Pakistani Rangers. It was a prayer for international Peace on the Indo-Pak border which often witnesses echo of gun shots.
>
> This amavas they were only about 300 strong. They are the die-hard Sikh 'darshan abhilakhi' the pilgrimage aspirants  of the foremost Sikh shrine  Kartarpur or the abode of God which lay on Indo-Pak border within the Pak territory. They are led by Jathedar Kuldip Singh Wadala ex-MLA, ex-Gen. Secretary of Sikh Parliament the SGPC.
>
> But this time they were a little disappointed. Not because of the official delay in the approval of 'Corridor Plan' but because the visibility was poor and high elephant grass was grown in-between the border and their beloved Kartarpur.
>
> In the end of their prayers they also prayed to the Pak Rangers, "Brothers if you hear, we request you in the name of Allah, please remove the high elephant grass that prevent our 'darshan'.
>
> The cause of their other disappointment was the behaviour of leaders of their brother Sikh Party the Shromani Akali Dal which "was in fact damaging the Sikh cause," said their leader, "Because we want open corridor and these people are requesting the Indian Govt to allow a delegation of 100 pilgrims to Kartarpur." Wadala said, "They are betraying the Sikh cause." It is reminded that recently the Sikh body has sought Indian  permission for a Jatha of 100 Sikhs to visit Kartarpur.
>
> Kartarpur is the first ever Sikh shrine situated on the right bank of river Ravi just 2 Kms. from the Indo-Pak border. Guru Nanak the founder of religion was always on the move but here he stayed for 18 years to demonstrate and practise his theory thus it became first  laboratory of Sikhism. It is a unique place which is revered by all the three communities. It is the last abode  of the Founder where his Islamic tomb and Hindu smadh exist side by  side. Interestingly one smadh (third)exist in the Indian side as well. The Pakistan Govt has agreed to grant a free passage to the Indian Sikhs to pay their obeisance. Every Amavas day the Sikhs gather at border from where the shrine the miraculous place is visible, and pray for international peace and opening .
>
>  Sir, even Sir Ceril Radcliffe who drew boundary-line between India  and Pakistan in 1947 could not divide Kartarpur. People know that as per June 3, 1947 declaration the whole of Gurdaspur distt. was given to Pakistan which meant that Kartarpur had gone deep in Pakistan territory. But the division didn't work and had to be revised. Radcliffe bisected Gurdaspur in such a way that Kartarpur was exactly on the borderline.
>
> The Pakistan Govt has agreed to grant a free passage to the Indian Sikhs to pay their obeisance. That means no passport or visa is required. But the Govt of India has not so far favourably reacted to the Pak proposal.

New year arrival
Stormy weather fails to delay Sacramento's debut baby of 2004
By Tony Bizjak -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 2:15 a.m. PST Friday, January 2, 2004

On a New Year's morning buffeted by wind and rain, the area's first baby of 2004 remained calm and collected, even through the momentary mid-morning power outage at Mercy General Hospital in east Sacramento.
Shanejit Singh, born at 10 seconds after midnight, basically slept through it all.
Singh is the second son born to Baljit and Harmith Singh, who moved here from Fiji five years ago for a better life.
Shanejit came into the world weighing 6 pounds, 14 ounces, and measuring 20 inches.
It was, said his mother, Harmith, a pretty easy labor. Shanejit slumbered in her arms, seeming to grimace a couple of times during Sacramento's first press conference of the year.
He looked regal with a Happy New Year crown on a head of thick black hair.
"I just waited for a few minutes" until near midnight, then pushed, the mother said. "I'm very excited."
Dad works as a press operator for the Pennysaver publishing company.
The couple moved to the United States with their first son, Indarjit Singh, when political unrest and an economic downturn made it tough to keep the family dairy farm running, Baljit Singh said.
They came to Sacramento to be with other members of the Singh family.
Mom hopes that means good opportunity for her New Year's son.
"I want him to be something like a doctor or lawyer," she said. "I want him to be nice to his mom and dad and brother. I have hopes for him."
Dad, for his part, wants Shanejit "to be just a good, educated citizen."
With that, a sleeping Shanejit appeared to offer a good citizen's first smile.

Southern California quake kills at least 2
Monday, December 22, 2003
PASO ROBLES, Calif.- An earthquake rocked California's central coast Monday and shook the state from Los Angeles to San Francisco, collapsing old downtown buildings in this small town and killing at least two people in the rubble.
The 11:16 a.m. quake - its magnitude measured at 6.5 - pitched the roof of Paso Robles' 1892 clock tower building into the street, crushing a row of parked cars in this San Luis Obispo County town about 20 miles east of the epicenter.

It was the most powerful quake to strike California since a 7.1 quake rocked the desert near Joshua Tree more than four years ago. No one was killed in the 1999 quake.

The main shock Monday was centered in a sparsely populated area about 11 miles north of the coastal town of Cambria. It was immediately followed by at least five aftershocks larger than 3.3, the biggest of which was estimated at 4.7, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake shook the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, the estate of the legendary publisher William Randolph Hearst. The castle - popular with tourists this time of its year because of its Hearst family Christmas ornaments - reported no injuries and no immediate signs of any serious damage but was evacuated as a precaution.

The quake also rocked the federal courthouse in San Francisco, 165 miles to the northwest of the epicenter, and sent the building's upper floors swaying for about 30 seconds. People in downtown Los Angeles, 185 miles southeast, felt a sustained rolling motion.

"It was pretty sharp," said Sharyn Conn, receptionist at the oceanside Cypress Cove Inn in Cambria, population 6,200. "It really went on and on. I just got everyone under the door frames and rode it out."

In Paso Robles, a town of 25,000 people in a region dotted with wineries and horse ranches, firefighters dug through the debris of the collapsed row of stores in the clock-tower building.

Two people were confirmed dead in Paso Robles, said Ron Alsop, emergency services coordinator in the largely rural county of about 250,000 people. A third person was missing there, he said.

Nick Sherwin, 61, who operated Pan Jewelers in the building, said he had ordered five employees and eight customers out, but "the big jolt hit" when he was about 10 feet from the door.

"My roof basically jumped onto the street and landed on cars with people in them," Sherwin said as he watched firefighters recover the bodies. The cars "are crushed like little toys, nothing left."

Other than Paso Robles, damage appeared minor elsewhere in the region. Several people were reported hurt by falling barrels at a winery, San Luis Obispo County authorities said.

About 10,000 homes and businesses were without power in the San Luis Obispo area, said John Nelson, spokesman for Pacific Gas & Electric. Phone service became spotty as the system quickly became overloaded.

At the Hearst Castle, the only known damage was a blown transformer in the campground below the hill, said Roy Stearns, spokesman for the state Department of Parks and Recreation. But a crew was being organized to go through each of the castle's 150 rooms to look more carefully.

The quake was felt in the control room of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant operated by PG&E. Nelson said that there appeared to be no damage to the plant and that it was functioning normally, but officials would conduct a "walk-through" to be sure.

The quake struck in a known fault zone on a series of faults that run parallel to the San Andreas Fault, said Lucy Jones, scientist in charge of the U.S. Geological Survey office in Pasadena.

"It's luckily on the coast - there is not very much nearby. That's a good thing," she said.

The last one of a similar size in the area was in 1952, said Ross Stein of the USGS in Menlo Park.

"This probably shook strong enough you would expect all kinds of damage to the contents of houses," said Tom Heaton, professor of earthquake engineering at the California Institute of Technology. He added landslides were also possible.

Superintendent Pamela Martens of the Coast Unified School District in Cambria said school was already recessed for the holidays and there were no reports of injuries among staff.

"Right now we're seeing things off the shelf and all over the place. Computers are down," she said.

Indian Canadians run but don't win mayoral poll
Thursday, November 13, 2003

TORONTO: At least seven Indo-Canadians ran for mayor of Toronto, the biggest metropolis in Canada with probably the largest concentration of South Asians, but lost badly in a race that had 40 candidates.

Among the two frontrunners, Liberal David Miller, 44, a Harvard University law graduate, won with 44 percent, and John Tory came second, with 38 percent of the votes.

Except for three other candidates who were actually seen by voters on television, virtually none of the others were given any face time nor considered serious contenders.

Ahmad Shehab made out the best with 1,796 votes. Ram Narula secured 504, Monowar Hossain 407, Duri Naimji 398, Rabindra Prashad 180, Hardy Dhir 144 and Ratan Wadhwa 86. All were considered to have secured zero percent of the vote.

Among the councillors, except for Bas Balkissoon from ward 41 in Scarborough, no other Indo-Canadian managed a significant showing even in heavily South Asian areas.

Toronto prides itself on being the most multi-ethnic city but did not deliver a municipal council that reflected that diversity.

Subject: Some good words --Let us think

READ EACH SENTENCE SLOWLY AND THINK ABOUT IT......

LOVE starts with a SMILE , grows with a KISS , and ends with a TEAR.
DON'T cry over anyone who won't cry over you.
Good FRIENDS are hard to find, harder to leave, and                  impossible to forget.
You can only go as far as you push.
ACTIONS speak louder than words.
The HARDEST thing to do is watch the one you love, love somebody else.
DON'T let the past hold you back, you're missing the good stuff.
LIFE'S SHORT. If you don't look around once in a while you might miss it.
A BEST FRIEND is like a four leaf clover, HARD TO FIND and LUCKY TO HAVE.
Some people make the world SPECIAL just by being in it.
BEST FRIENDS are the siblings God forgot to give us.
When it HURTS to look back, and you're SCARED to look ahead,     you can look beside you and your BEST FRIEND will be there.
TRUE FRIENDSHIP "NEVER" ENDS. Friends are FOREVER.
Good friends are like STARS     You don't always see them,                     but you know they are ALWAYS THERE.
DON'T  frown. You never know who is falling in love with your smile.
What do you do when the only person who can make you stop crying is the person who made you cry?
Nobody is perfect until you fall in love with them.
Everything is okay in the end. If it's not okay, then it's not the end.
Most people walk in and out of your life, but only FRIENDS leave       footprints in your heart.
Send this on to everyone special in your life, even the people who really make you MAD sometimes

Who will stop the killings of innocent Sikhs in United States

After the September 11 terrorist attack on the United States Sikhs in the United States are living under the shadow of fear and terrorism. In various cities in the United States Sikhs are being brutally murdered by some bad elements as they wear the various colored turbans. The whole world knows that Sikhs are a peace loving community and has nothing to do with any kind of terrorist activities. Not only this most of the Sikhs put their lives in danger to save the lives of peoples in the world trade center during September 11 attack. But it is more than unfortunate that during the past few months several innocent Sikhs are brutally murdered. Killing of innocent Sikhs is happening one after the other and there seems no end of killing. Now the question is that who is responsible to save the lives of innocent Sikhs. Simple answer of this question is that police administration and law enforcement agencies are responsible to save the lives of its citizens on whom the huge amount of the taxpayers is being spent for their services. But this is a matter of great regret and of human concern that these law enforcement agencies are not doing their job honestly and sincerely. Look at the remarks of one cab company owner of Redwood City, which appeared in the San Jose mercury news on Sept. 15,2003 after the killing of Sikh cab driver, “Everyday these drivers are insulted by passengers who tell them ‘go back to your own country or call them Bin Laden he said and when they go to complain about this to the police they never listen, I think that the police feel we are not part of the community so they can not be bothered to take the time to help us out.” Not only this the Redwood City police officials continued playing with the body of Sikh cab driver who was shot dead and with the grieved family from 3:00 am to 7:00 am.on the date of killing of this Sikh Cab Driver Police even gave no clue about the killing of this Sikh driver to his family members. Now the question arises that if the police

Administration cannot save the lives of its citizens then what is the fun to spend a huge amount of money of the taxpayers on the police administration. Is there any body who can ask the police administration that is the job of the police is only to move around in the police vehicles and citing traffic law offenders only. It is also more than unfortunate that after every killing of every Sikh cab driver we are watching lot of stories in the media about the future planning and stragedy of the police on how to save the lives of cab drivers. But sorry to say that nothing happened in a period of more than two years. We must remember that we are only mourning the deaths of each innocent Sikh and expressing our sympathy with the grieved families but who will wash the tears of the grieved family members for the rest of their lives. One can only say that only the bearer of the shoe knows where his shoe is pinching .In other words families who lost their loved ones can only feel what is going on  in their hearts, no body else. The need of the hour is to gear up the police administration in every city to make them more effective and responsible to save the lives of their citizens. Can we expect from the law enforcement agencies that necessary measures will be taken seriously to save the lives of innocent Sikhs in future??

Subject: World Punjabi Conference

Dear Ratan,
Today one of my friend Dr Farrukh Khan, teaching post-colonial literature at LUMS, forwarded me the cite in response to which I am writing to you.
I attended the WPC held in London as a journalist. There are lots of controversies one can bring to light with solid undeniable facts but I would prefer to limit myself to the rumpus created at the conference cite. As for the arrangements, logistics and behavior of Amin Malik I can forward you contacts of the delegates from Pakistan whom can be contacted for further confirmation.
As for Amin Malik it is true that a Sikh guy broke his nose. But that unfortunate incident happened when Amin Malik pushed the Sikh guy physically when he was discussing the poor arrangements made by the conference host. The moment Amin Malik pushed the local Sikh guy he got furious and punched his face. It has got nothing to do with Iqbal Quasir except the fact that he is very well known in Sikh community because of his contribution to Punjabi language and literature and the book he has written about the Sikh Shrines in Pakistan. It has also got nothing to do with the Atta Ullah and others. I repeat that the facts about this unfortunate rumpus can be confirmed from other Pakistani delegates who were around at that moment because almost all of them were staying at a gurdwara and were about to leave board the buss near which the incident took place.
However, I am amazed at the shamelessness of the Amin Malik who instead of acknowledging the blunders is blaming the delegates who suffered because of his irresponsible and childish attitude.
Sincerely,
Bilal Ahmad.

Subject: FYI Please -A COPY OF THE LETTER FROM Chairman RNC

Dear Satnam,

President Bush's work to strengthen the economy and create jobs continued this week as the President emphasized new ways to help unemployed Americans and small businesses. President Bush laid out his plan to improve job training and give workers the skills and education they need to find good jobs. The President's proposals include Personal Re-employment Accounts that will give over a million unemployed Americans up to $3,000 they can spend on training, education, or in other ways that help their job search. President Bush is also pushing for federal job training programs that are flexible, accountable, and focused on helping individuals to acquire the skills they need to get the jobs most in demand - not on enlarging a government bureaucracy.

Earlier in the week, the President visited New Jersey to highlight how his new jobs and growth law is already helping small business create jobs. Small businesses across America are expanding because the new law allows them to deduct $100,000 of their new equipment purchases - four times the old amount - and provides meaningful tax relief for the small business owner. The President's economic agenda is already working to spur new investment and create jobs, and the President is continuing to build on this positive momentum with innovative policies to further stimulate the economy.

Sincerely,

Subject: Please send me list of institutions where Punjabi is being taught

Respected Sir,

I hope this letter will find you in the best of health and spirit. I am a research scholar at Punjabi University Patiala ( India ), pursuing multidisciplinary research related with the field of Punjabi language, Applied Linguistics and Education .The topic of my research is 'Teaching and Study of Punjabi as a Second Language'. (An applied linguistics perspective)

Punjabi as a second language is a new & emerging concept as Punjabi has become second language in Hindi-speaking-areas (i.e. Delhi , Hariana, Himachal Pradesh etc) and English-speaking-areas (i.e. Canada , UK.USA, Singapore etc). As per language science is concerned Mother tongue, First language and Second languages are entirely different concepts but for Punjabi teaching, history reveals that we are taking all these things as same. Although linguistic situations in English-speaking-areas ( Canada , UK , USA ) are entirely different from Punjab ( India ), where Punjabi is a mother tongue of majority people but we are still using traditional teaching materials and methods-techniques for Punjabi teaching in English-speaking-areas same as Punjab ( India ). It‘s a huge violation of theories and principles of Educational Linguistics.

As the outcome of great struggle of Punjabi lovers, now Punjabi has become second language in Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh (India), British Columbia (Canada), UK and USA, but we have no research based teaching materials and methods-techniques for Punjabi teaching as a second /Foreign language. So Punjabi teaching in Hindi-speaking-areas and English-speaking-areas (especially in Canada , UK & USA ) is facing lot of problems. In the present circumstances, when Punjabi language has got status of second language in States other than Punjab (India) and abroad, linguistic research is essential and required for the solution of problems of Punjabi teaching and studies, which are entirely different from the problems of Punjabi teaching as a first language.

For the fulfillment of this purpose, Now Punjabi University , Patiala ( India ) has begun research (PhD level) in this field. The sole purpose of present research is to develop teaching-learning materials and techniques for the ' Teaching of Punjabi as a Second / Foreign language in above mentioned areas. I am pursuing above-mentioned research (PhD).It’s first research (PhD level) in the field of Punjabi language teaching. For this research; I have to collect research-related primary data from Hindi-speaking-areas and English-speaking-areas. Based on analysis of such data the study will provide its considerations/suggestions and solutions about the problems of Punjabi teaching and studies as a second language. My University is sending me to Canada , U.S.A, and U.K for data collection shortly (Letter for this purpose has been sent to concerned embassy). I have done all theoretical work for this research and now it’s near about completion.

Please send me the list (name, addresses ie.Fax, email etc) of eminent schools / institutions where Punjabi is being taught.

With best regards,

Gurmeet Sidhu

Academy of the Punjab in North America (APNA)
Newsletter :  May 30, 2003

Dear APNA Members and Friends,

Hope you are doing well.  Following, please find some APNA news and updates:

APNA is currently working on a major project to establish a permanent institution in West Punjab for the promotion and development of Punjabi language in Pakistan.  We are at the early stages of planning.  The idea is to raise funds in the USA and Canada for the establishment of a high ranking body of Punjabi writers, scholars and activists for the purpose of language planning, introduction of Punjabi language as the medium of education at primary school level, publishing books, magazines, daily newspaper and other projects.  We will greatly appreciate any input from you on the goals and objectives and structure of this institution, as well as, your suggestions and proposals for fund raising.
Balwant Gargi, pioneer of  play writing in Punjabi and a major figure in modern Punjabi literature passed away on April 21, 2003.  APNA, ISHA and other Punjabi organizations in the Washington DC Metropolitan area held a meeting to remember Balwant Gargi's life and work. You may read some of the news coverage of Gargi's death at:  http://www.apnaorg.com/articles/gargi/
Moizullah Tariq Malik, an active member of APNA and a highly gifted young Punjabi poet also passed away in April 2003.  You may review his Collection of Poetry in Roman/English that he had posted on APNA Discussion Forum over the last couple of years.
We have added a lot more material on APNA web page, including:
Shahmukhi Translation of the Holy Quran by Sharif Kunjahi.

Subject: Some information about Irak Gurudwara Sahib

Dear all Guru Nanak Nam Leva jeo,
                                   Waheguru ji ka khalsa
                                    Waheguru ji ki Fateh

I can easily feel the pulse of all Guru Nanak Nam Leva residing in the every corner of the world that they are too much anxious about the fate of Gurudwara Sahib in Bagdad. There are still two news, one is good news, which indicates that Gurudwara  Building is safe and nothing wrong happened with the building. But at the same time there is one more news through the sources of Punjab Govt that the Gurudwara Sahib Building is damaged and Govt is trying to Repair this building. So for as my personal information is concerned nothing happened to the building.I have some information about this Gurudwara Sahib which I would like to share with you all.During the Iran -Irak war in 1979-1980 I was there in Bagdad. After entering the Bagdad city we tried to find some ware abouts of Gurudwara Sahib in Bagdad. After a struggle of lot of weeks some body told us that there is one place near the west side of Bagdad Railway Station where we can find some more information. I alongwith some friends visited this place and find that there is a very small building near the graveyard about half mile west to the Bagdad Railway Station.we tried to enter this building but it was locked and we were told that the owner of this building is a Iraki Muslim. After some days we traced the owner of this building. We requested him to open the door of the building to pay our homage to our Guru.He agreed to our request. This building at that time has only very small two rooms .On the wall of one room there was a one stone graved with few Arabic language words which indicates the visit of Guru Nanak Dev ji to this place and in the other room there was a grave of one muslim saint. In front of these two rooms there was a very small lawn in which there was a tree.We were paying some money to the owner of this building every week and he was opening the door of this building every friday for the Sikh Sangat( At that time only few Sikhs were there)Later after the slow down of Irak -Iran war thousands of Sikhs went to Irak for their buissness and jobs. Some Sikhs were also employed in the different Govt departments. When the Irak-Iran war was on the peak then there was a heavy bomb shelling around this Historical building But thank God nothing happened to this building. But after the flow of time Sikh Sangat constructed a Gurudwara Sahib  on that place in which a construction  companyof former Minister of Punjab Late sardar Sohan Singh Bassi in Basra played a major role in construction of this building. I was also told by some of my friends later that a well known furniture buissnessman of New Delhi  Sardar Mukhtiar Singh who had a very close relationship with Suddam Hussein also played a major role in constructing this Gurudwara Sahib.

I will appreciate if any body will share more information about this Gurudwara Sahib

Dear Senator,

As the war in Iraq continues, it is imperative that Americans stand united with other Americans. Because of this, we request your assistance in keeping the film, “Dysfunktional Family,” from being released in movie theaters unless Miramax agrees to edit scenes that could potentially incite hate crimes against Sikh Americans.

The film is scheduled to be released on April 4th. During the film, one of the lead characters says to a bearded and turbaned Sikh man, “I knew you were around here somewhere, Bin Ladin.” By associating the Sikh turban and image with Osama Bin Landin and the war in Iraq, this film is creating conditions for even more Sikh Americans to be harmed and possibly killed.

Balbir Singh Sodhi, a bearded and turbaned Sikh man, was shot and killed in a backlash hate crime on September 15th, four days after the attacks on New York City. Because of the war in Iraq, the FBI is already watching backlash crimes against Sikhs, Arabs, and Muslims increase. Sikh Americans, who are visible because of their turbans, are taking the brunt of the attacks. We cannot even risk the chance of another murder. Now is not the time for Americans to be incited against Americans.

The Sikh religion, which is the fifth largest religion in the world, teaches the equality of all people and the rights of all people to worship God as they wish. These are very American values, as well. The turban and beard of a Sikh is a symbol of his commitment to these and other universal principles. Almost everyone living in the United States who wears a turban is a Sikh.

Please let them know that it is not in the best interest of public safety for our country if the film, "Dysfunktional Family" is released unless edits are made to the Sikh-related scenes.

> 6.0 Many of us common Punjabis would be hard pressed to name actual

> NEED TO AND IT DOES NOT THREATEN THE LANGUAGE).
>  I am heavily involved in a project developing new words for the Punjabi
> language here in the west. Please see my article.
> Article:
> New Words for the Punjabi Lexicon and why influence of other languages is
> a positive factor in enriching a language.
> New words for definition of species not indigenous  to Punjab, where
> lexicon lacks sufficient nouns
> The importance of preserving 'pure' Punjabi amongst changes that have
> occurred and need to occur
> Why original Punjabi words have been lost , and what damage limitation can
> be done
> All the above is argued in the context for a need to add specie
> definitions. The project being triggered by Khushwant Singh's comments
> that Punjabi was inferior to English and not capable of dealing with
> species such as Blackbirds by being specific.
> Author / Kalam : Rupinderpal Singh Dhillon
> 1.0 Khushwant Singh had stated 2 years ago that he prefers to write in the
> English language as it's word power is superior to Punjabi. His logic was
> simple. Punjabi only had words to describe indigenous creatures to itself,
> stretching at the most to those in the rest of the Indian Subcontinent.
> For international words it had been invaded by the influences of Urdu,
> Persian, and Hindi. But what made it impractical was that it had absorbed
> English words, which when used in a Punjabi context were illogical. For
> example an English word adopted by Punjabi is ' First Class' which in
> Punjabi has become Fasklas. Although this instance works, in the case of
> 'Blackbird'  if used it would probably be balakbad  Although this can be
> used for this foreign English bird, it is illogical as in Punjabi it
> should be Kala Panchee / Cheeree. But that could be any black bird. And
> thus he felt confident in his argument. However his argument is both
> illogical as will be seen and a direct challenge to the Punjabi lexicon to
> produce nouns to define international species specially in Punjabi.
>
> 2.0 Where Khushwant Singh's logic fails is this. All languages evolve over
> time and as part of the natural process absorb words of other cultures,
> adapt words and invent words. In English for example the name Wendy was
> total invention of an author ( from Peter Pan), and has become part of the
> English lexicon. Shakespeare was always doing this, and Dr Samuel Johnson
> compiled the world's first English dictionary mixing up the words of all
> regional influences to standard it. So on that basis Fasklas from English
> is natural from meeting Westerners, Piaz from meeting Persians and Mez
> from Urdu. These words filled a need. Invention of words also come from
> the imagination of the educated too. Latin and Greek have been married so
> many times to construct new words. So Punjabi is no different, absorbing
> the lexicon of all invading cultures. As for dealing with species, quite
> simply it is up to us to use traditional Punjabi or other languages that
> comfortably fit within the Punjabi tongue , to devise these words. Perhaps
> I am vain, but I have made this my task. I have no right to dictate new
> words merely suggest, and therefore hope to trigger off a debate where all
> of us between us deal with the classification of Species and other words.
>
> 3.0 Of course we can be defensive also. France has gone out of its way to
> protect its culture and lexicon, by making it illegal to use English words
> where French ones have not existed. It simply has invented its own. A
> famous example is that France refuses the word 'Software' and has created
> it's own version to be used in written documents and books. We certainly
> must not forget the importance of 'pure Punjabi'. Day by day Hindi, Urdu
> and English are replacing old Punjabi words. This is not acceptable.
> Adaptation of new words mean an alternative or an addition, not
> obliteration of perfectly functional Punjabi words. What must never change
> is the common Punjabi and basics. That would kill the language. The
> problem Punjabi has faced is that from Ranjit Singh onwards foreign
> languages have curried favour with the influential and powerful. So
> Punjabi words were lost to Urdu ones. Most of us Punjabis ( me included)
> can only speak the common tongue and are uneducated people. Only a
> handful, such as (Guru) Nanak and Shah Bullah have maintained high level
> literati status. Only since the introduction of the printing press and its
> political communicative needs in the last century have most of us began to
> learn to read and write. I speak brilliant basic Punjabi. But like many
> can not read or write and certainly have a small volcabury ( perhaps 600
> Punjabi words). These are the basics. Every language has that much. In
> English it is a fact that the majority common population only have 400-600
> words in their personal use ( mostly sentence constructing words at that).
> The highly educated have 2,000 words. And that is where Punjabi has fell,
> as only a few know the more rarer and high level words. Nouns are
> Punjabi's biggest weakness, as any known high level nouns go out of use by
> the common man.
>
> To challenge Khushwant Singh I first needed to learn to read and write so
> I could create my Species Book. The positive side has been I now can read
> Punjabi and write it. The negative side has been I have realised when
> reading Punjabi written by the Literati and press that us common Punjabis
> have extremely limited volcaburies. So I invested in a Punjabi dictionary
> which has been brilliant. But coming back to my project it lacks many
> words as well. So although in this section I have argued that we have to
> prevent our language from being overtaken by foreign influence, there is
> an argument to say that it can be positive too. English has become richer
> by adopting certain words. The idea is to adopt without losing the ' bread
> and butter' of one's mother language. As common Punjabis have enough words
> for this ( and those in Punjab itself definitely do) and Singers are
> helping keeping our language alive, there will never be a danger here.
>
> 4.0 Some languages offer alternatives to using the forcibly invasive ones
> such as English and naturally fit the phonetics of Punjabi. Others provide
> alternatives to prevent the balakbad problem. Spanish is the first
> category, and native American and other languages are in the second
> category. It has been argued why Punjabi must be defensive and why Species
> definition is a good project. Now the argument is why it is good to adopt
> words from other languages and the discussion of samples form my proposals.
>
> 5.0 Just because due to Hindi, Urdu and Persian ( Punjabi the word is
> actually Persian) have altered Punjabi does not make it unnatural or bad.
> For example Middle English is nothing like modern English. ( Forget Old
> English, that is to modern English what Sanskrit is to Urdu). Chaucer's
> sentence " When April shovers coombe asoote" was middle English. In modern
> English that would be ""When April showers arrive." So it can be seen
> languages do change. Fact After Chauser French , and Latin and Anglo
> altered English. Fact Urdu, Hindi and English have done the same to some
> Punjabi. Being influenced or useful to add words is not ruining a
> language. It is enriching it. As argued above, the fundamentals of a
> language must never be changed.
>
> 6.0 Many of us common Punjabis would be hard pressed to name actual
> existing animal names beyond bhed, Ooth and Sher. This is strictly not
> true in Punjab. But the influence of names and words is important. Like
> American English developed separately from British English, it is a fact
> that Diaspora Punjabi has become its own Version of traditional Punjabi.
> It is Diaspora Punjabi that I am concerned with. Traditional Punjabi
> itself is changing. For example in India, Punjabi schools are now teaching
> the words Cheetera for Tiger. Punjabis from the old days who had
> immigrated to the west, remember Sher as being Tiger, and Babar Sher as
> Lion. In Modern day Punjab Sher has become Lion. Taxila Punjabi is
> challenging the regional variation like Dr Johnson did. Standardisation is
> good, but as has been seen Punjabi in the Diaspora will use different
> words. That is why a classification that is specific is required. It is
> not enough to call a big cat just Sher anymore. to add to the confusion
> older Punjabis in India call a Tiger a Cheetah. So below I discuss the
> animal names I propose.
>
>
> 6.0 Well known animals are Tiger ( Cheetah) citw, Peacock ( More) mOr,
> Butterfly ( Titlee) IqqlI, Crow ( kaan) kW and Frog (dadoo) f`dU. Note so
> well known animals include Crab ( kekrha) kykV, Flamingo ( baglaa) bglw,
> Cockroach ( tilchataa) iqlctw, Gorilla ( banmaanas) bnmwns and star fish(
> Tara Mucchee) qwrw m`CI. New to the lexicon , by my research ( and by this
> read it to mean I have adapted these ones) is Hummingbird ( Valeo) v`lya,
> Lobster ( Langosta{Jeenga}) lw\gOsqw, Comodo Dragon ( Comodo Draache)
> komodo fRwCy and Meercat ( meerkat) mIrkq.
>
> The above are a small sample. others I have adopted include Lanav Kaan ,
> which is Cheerokee for Raven. Draache is the German word for Dragon and
> Langosta the Spanish for Lobster. Jeenga does exist in Punjabi for is used
> to describe all of them from Prawns to Lobsters, and I feel the adopted
> word should pretext it. Incidentally Ghambass is Spanish for Prawns , so
> Ghambass Jeenga sounds more Punjabi then using the word Prawn.  I have

Subject: from a research scholar of Punjabi

Respected Rattan Reehal ji,

I  hope this letter will find you in the best of health and spirit. I am a research  scholar of Punjabi University Patiala ,pursuing multidisciplinary research in the field of Punjabi language ,Applied Linguistics and Education .The topic of my research is “Teaching and Study of Punjabi as a second language” .( an applied linguistics perspective ) Under this research  I will study the problems of Punjabi teaching and studies as a second language in

Nowadays when Punjabi has become second language officially in some Hindi-speaking-areas (ie.Hariana ,Delhi ,J&K )  English-speaking-areas (ie.British Colombia in Canada ) and Punjab in Pakistan ,unfortunately no research has been done in the field of teaching and studies of Punjabi as a second language ,Traditional teaching methods ,techniques and subject materials ,which are formed for first language Punjabi teaching are being used for second language Punjabi teaching .This practice  fully contradicts the theories and principles of Pedagogical Linguistics and Education Psych

In the present  circumstances, when Punjabi language has got status of second language  in States other than Punjab and abroad , linguistic research  is essential and required for the solution of problems of Punjabi teaching and studies , which are entirely different from the problems of Punjabi teaching as a first language .(ie,spoken and taught as a first language in the Indian Punjab ) For the fulfillment  of this purpose ,I am pursuing above mentioned

My research study is directly concerned with the problems (language &cultural dignity) of Punjabi peoples, which are hebetated in English-speaking –areas (i.e.canada, USA , UK.etc where Punjabi is taught and spoken as a second language)

For this research, I have to collect research-related primary data from Hindi-speaking-areas and English-speaking –areas (where Punjabi is spoken and taught as a second language) On the basis of these data the study will provide its considerations and solutions about the problems of Punjabi teaching and studies as a second language. My University is sending me to Canada ,U.S.A ,and U.K for data collection shortly , but I have need some

Name and Address of: (E-mail, Fax, Phone much preferred)

1 Schools where Punjabi is taught as a second language,

2 Punjabi Teachers,

3 Punjabi literary circles / organization.

I hope you will help me and send me above information as early as possible.

Subject: Robert Burns

Dear Mr. Reehal Ji,

I wonder if you can offer me any assistance. I have been asked to do a response to the "toast to the lasses" at the Burns Supper in the London Borough of Newham. This is as a result of my background of my being a Panjabi professional women who was brought up in Glasgow and speak with  but now Scottish accent. This blend is unique in England and very appropriate for the multi cultural community of Newham.

I am aware that you have translated all of Robert Burns writings into Panjabi and I was wondering if there are any quotations that I could use in my response that would reflect either the uniqueness of Indian/Asian men or the similarities in that men are the same no matter what their background is. I would of course want to do this in a humorous way and not in an insulting way.

Grateful for any advise that you can offer me.

Subject: Request of Information

Dear Mr Rattan Reehal

I am trying to find some information regarding the Punjabi
newspaper Bhulekha. I live in London. Could you please tell me if
there is any distribution of the newspaper here in the UK? Even if
there is not a regular distribution, where could I find some (even
old) issues?

I am addressing you because I found an interesting page about
World Punjabi Conference on your website. Could you please provide
some and names and contacts of some Punjabi language organisations
here in the UK or in Pakistan / India? I am interested in the kind of
cultural/educational activities like those mentioned on your website.
Especially, I am interested in Punjabi mass-media (both Gurmukhi or
Shahmukhi).

If you could provide me with some useful information and refer me to
a few websites/addresses, especially about Bhulekha, I would be very
thankful indeed.

Thank you very much (Dhan vad)

Regards,

Linder Mannta

I just recently came across your web page.

However, I do have a question.

Do you also have tutor site that can be accessed with a sound card?

Such as learning the alphabet by reading it in text.

I am also looking for text books with audio tapes. Those are somewhat difficult to come by in the USA.

I have been attempting to learn Punjabi on a off in my spare time for a
couple of years now. My progress has been quite slow as I being English and
working amoung English speakers I have had little chance to practice
conversation. After looking at your web site and your address I hoped that
as I travel to Birmingham at least twice a month there might be some way I
could become involved with your organisation and get the conversational
practice I need to fulfil my ambition.
I am a ICT teacher, trained mechanic and holder of lorry licences so perhaps
your Gurdwara could put me to good use occasionally?

Dear All,

I was quite insulted by Professor Khushwant Singh's commonest about Punjabi being limited. Firstly I too write in English (presently writing a novel about Sikhs). Secondly, he fails to take one important factor into consideration. English developed over thousands of years and absorbed words from other languages where it had none. Therefore it is legitimate for Punjabi to borrow words from other languages. He also fails to consider that animals of ones own country are easier to describe. Many words are just invented. Thus as a challenge to him I have composed a list of new words to describe and name animals and creatures not familiar to the Punjab. I am looking for someone out there that will be willing to publish these.

Please let me Know,

R Dhillon.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please see the following regarding our festival being held here in
Birmingham on the 23rd June at Victoria Square, City Centre. Could you
please announce this grand charity event and perhaps send someone to cover
the event. The following will explain the importance of the event. Please
feel free to edit as you deem appropriate.

Sincerely yours,

Govinda Bhasya

Lord Jagannatha's Festival
June 23rd, Victoria Square, Birmingham England
From 12 noon to 9 PM
About the festival:

The festival of Lord Jagannatha is one of the most ancient and cherished
annual events on the Hindu calendar. Millions of pilgrims from all over
India and the world will be attending this year's festival in Jagannatha
Puri, Orissa, India on the exact same day as our celebration here in
Birmingham City Centre!
The story of Lord Jagannatha attracts the hearts and minds of all people.
The name Jagannatha means "The Lord of The Universe," and is one of the many
names by which Lord Sri Krishna, The Supreme Lord, is known. In brief, the
festival is the joyous celebration of Lord Krishna's return to His beautiful
home and beloved devotees in the sacred cowherd village of Vrindavan from
His opulent capital in Dwaraka.
Lord Krishna had left His sweet, simple life with His dear most devotees,
the cowherd men and women of Vrindavan, to rule over the world, as the
Divine King. Although He had all opulence, worship, and the reverent love of
His devotees in Dwaraka, Lord Krishna missed the pure, simple love of the
cowherd men and women of Vrindavan. Many years had gone by but the Lord
never, for a moment, forgot the sweet dealings with His devotees. Sometimes
He would cry for them causing the residents of Dwaraka to wonder what to do
for Him. Sri Krishna especially missed Srimati Radharani. As His topmost
devotee She is the only one who, with Her perfect, selfless love and
devotion, can control Lord Krishna and give Him that pure spiritual love He
relishes, which is without any mood of awe and reverence - only pure
unadulterated transcendental love in perfect selflessness and devotion.
Finally, after seeing Sri Krishna was unable to be consoled by the
residents of Dwaraka, Sri Krishna's brother, Lord Balarama, and His sister,
Lady Subhadra, escorted Him back to Vrindavan in glorious chariots to be
reunited with His beloved devotees of Vrindavan. Upon seeing Srimati
Radharani once again, after such prolonged, heart rending, separation, Lord
Krishna became stunned. His eyes dilated in wonder and His limbs went into
His body like the limbs of a tortoise. Likewise His brother and sister,
Balarama and Subhadra, became overwhelmed in this great mood of ecstatic
transcendental love. The cowherd maidservants of Srimati Radharani came to
Sri Krishna's aid and chanted Radharani's name loudly bringing Him back to
external consciousness so Their Most Holy reunion could resume.
On this day we have the great good fortune to behold the Supreme Lord and
receive His blessings and mercy. Also with Lord Jagannatha (black
complexioned) are the Deity forms of Lord Balarama (white complexioned) and
Lady Subhadra (golden complexioned). Their forms reveal the ecstasy of the
pastime described. Once a year Lord Jagannatha comes out of His splendid
temple in Jagannatha Puri, India, benedicting all the people of the world,
who may not be able to see Him otherwise, granting pure spiritual peace and
harmony.
This festival is now being re-enacted in all the world's major cities, such
as London, New York, Tokyo, Sidney, Paris, Birmingham, etc., largely by the
efforts of Lord Krishna's pure devotee, His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktivedanta
Swami Maharaja, who spread this Krishna consciousness movement to all
corners of the world. Now, following in his footsteps is his close friend
and foremost disciple, His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana
Maharaja. Srila Narayana Maharaja, a pure devotee of Lord Krishna, is the
world's most prominent exponent of Bhakti-yoga (the simple spiritual process
to link with the Supreme Lord in loving devotion), in the world today. We
are most grateful to have his saintly association here in Birmingham for
this occasion.
The festival being held here in Birmingham is unique in many ways. The
Deity of Lord Jagannatha is the largest Deity of Him in the world, standing
15 feet in height! Also, in the mood of the Lord, who is most accessible on
this day, we are hoping to feed 10,000 people in charity, pure sumptuous
vegetarian food! Come join the celebrants and dignitaries from all over the
world in this grand festival of Lord Jagannatha! Jaya Jagannatha!
